Setor investe e produção no País triplicará até 2011

10 de Julho de 2008 – Não é apenas a Votorantim que está investindo na expansão da extração de níquel. De acordo com o Instituto Brasileiro de Mineração (Ibram), a produção do minério no Brasil, que foi de 81 mil toneladas em 2007, deve triplicar até 2011, com um acréscimo de 200 mil toneladas ao ano. A Companhia Vale do Rio Doce aplicará US$ 1,9 bilhão até 2012 no projeto Vermelho, que deve alcançar uma capacidade de 46 mil toneladas ao ano de níquel na região de Carajás. Em outro projeto, Onça Puma, em Ourilândia no Norte (PA), a mineradora está investindo mais US$ 1,4 bilhão para que ainda este ano a mina possa entrar em operação, com capacidade de produção de 58 mil toneladas/ano de ferro-níquel. A Anglo American Brasil investirá US$ 1,5 bilhão no projeto de produção de ferro-níquel em Barro Alto (GO). Serão 3,5 mil trabalhadores envolvidos na expansão da exploração da mina e construção de uma unidade, que deve chegar a uma produção de 36 mil toneladas anuais de níquel até 2011.
