Preço do níquel em queda pode postergar investimentos

A desaceleração na demanda por níquel e a conseqüente queda de preço da commodity deve forçar as empresas a adiarem ou postergarem investimentos na lavra do minério. Na avaliação do analista global de commodities do Citi, Alan Heap, o preço de produção do níquel já está próximo de US$ 6, o que inviabiliza unidades já em operação e projetos mais caros, do chamado níquel laterítico.
“Os projetos de níquel laterítico exigem investimentos maiores por conta da rota tecnológica a ser aplicada. Este é o caso do projeto Goro, da Vale (na Nova Caledônia). Em média, o custo de uma unidade como essa seria de US$ 6 a libra, mas a mineradora garante que conseguirá extraí-lo a US$ 2 a libra”, afirmou Heap, que participou da Segunda Conferência Anual Americas Nickel. Heap reviu sua projeção de superávit de oferta do níquel para 2009, passando de 60 mil toneladas para 100 mil toneladas. Para este ano de 2008, ele acredita que já haverá uma superoferta de 40 mil toneladas de níquel no mercado internacional.
