Ferro: Rio Tinto prestes a ter presença na Índia

Depois de uma década ensaiando a entrada na exploração de ferro no subcontinente indiano, pode estar chegando a hora de a Rio Tinto finalmente começar a extrair minério. A parceria com a estatal Orissa vem tomando forma: nesta semana, a anglo-australiana informou que a área de Malangtuli, escolhida para ser a primeira exploração, já deve estrear como a segunda maior produtora de ferro do país, chegando a 25 milhões de toneladas anuais, atrás apenas da produção dos depósitos da NMDC ? que, ironicamente, é acionista minoritária da joint-venture. Desde a década de 1990 as partes discutiam a exploração conjunta de Malangtuli, mas uma série de discussões levou o caso às barras da Justiça e atrasou a produção. E a Rio Tinto já olha para a frente: outros depósitos tanto no estado de Orissa quanto em Tamil Nadu já estão sendo sondados pela companhia.
