Crise força Rio Tinto a adiar venda de ativos e rever investimentos

A crise financeira global obrigará a Rio Tinto a adiar os planos para se desfazer de US$ 10 bilhões em ativos neste ano, além de rever os investimentos e reduzir a produção de alumínio, mas a mineradora australiana disse que sua perspectiva continua favorável, apesar da turbulência do mercado. Ao informar hoje os números de sua produção no terceiro trimestre, a companhia disse que a China não está imune à crise e que, por isso, a demanda de commodities não deve se recuperar antes do próximo ano, embora no longo prazo os chineses continuem a puxar o consumo graças a seu forte crescimento doméstico.No trimestre encerrado em 30 de setembro, a Rio Tinto atingiu a produção recorde de 42,2 milhões de toneladas de minério de ferro, com um crescimento de 1% sobre a produção do trimestre anterior e de 17% sobre a do mesmo período do ano passado. Já a produção de cobre caiu 24% em relação à do segundo trimestre e 7% na comparação com a do terceiro trimestre de 2007, para 160 mil toneladas. A redução foi atribuída ao declínio do grau de minério na mina Escondida, no Chile. A produção de alumínio ficou em linha com a do segundo trimestre, em 1 milhão de toneladas, mas a de alumina caiu 3%, para 2,2 milhões de toneladas, e a de bauxita aumentou 5%, para 9 milhões de toneladas. A produção de carvão de coque cresceu 7% sobre a do segundo trimestre, para 2,2 milhões de toneladas.
A mineradora assumiu dívidas de US$ 40 bilhões para financiar a compra da gigante do alumínio Alcan e planejava se desfazer de pelo menos US$ 15 bilhões em ativos para reduzir a alavancagem. Segundo o diretor-financeiro da empresa, Guy Elliott, apesar do atraso nos desinvestimentos, a mineradora não terá dificuldade em pagar o serviço da dívida. Ele informou que os pagamentos só começam em outubro de 2009. “Dados os fluxos de caixa, o fato de que vamos vender alguns ativos e que durante o próximo ano os mercados de bônus vão se abrir um pouco, não tenho absolutamente nenhuma dúvida de que conseguiremos pagar o serviço da dívida”, afirmou. O presidente-executivo da Rio Tinto, Tom Albanese, declarou que, diante da atual turbulência, a Rio Tinto vai rever os gastos de curto prazo em seu programa de investimentos. “Não vamos iniciar projetos se não houver demanda”, afirmou.
Ele não apontou quais projetos poderiam ser afetados e também não quis comentar se a revisão dos gastos poderia afetar a previsão da Rio Tinto de aumentar a produção em 8,6% ao ano até 2015. A Rio Tinto rejeitou uma oferta hostil de compra, toda em ações, no valor de US$ 98 bilhões, feita pela BHP Billiton. Os méritos do perfil de crescimento da produção de cada uma delas têm sido objeto de acalorado debate entre ambas. A turbulência nos mercados de ações não mudou a posição da Rio Tinto em relação à oferta, disse a mineradora. Elliott reafirmou que a empresa não tem planos para se juntar à concorrente. “A BHP é que tem de se esforçar para conseguir nossa adesão, e eles não têm feito isso”, declarou.
