IBRAM presents sector actions for a low carbon economy at the Annual Congress UK & Brazil Partners in Energy

The mineral sector’s actions to ensure an energy transition to a low-carbon economy were exhibited and commented on by Alexandre Mello, Director of Associative Affairs and Climate Change Relations at the Brazilian Institute of Mining (IBRAM), at the 10th edition of the Annual UK Congress & Brazil Partners in Energy. The event took place last Monday (19), in Rio de Janeiro (RJ).
Alexandre Mello commented on the industry’s work to evolve into an even more sustainable activity and provide inputs to combat climate risks. “International discussions on the climate agenda highlight the need for the world to move forward in decarbonization. Brazilian mining is focused on contributing to this and IBRAM and associated mining companies structure the Mineração do Brasil ESG Agenda to promote transformations in mining processes, so that the sector can become even safer and more responsible”, he said.
He reinforced that this agenda is a priority for IBRAM and associated mining companies, so much so that the Institute signed a consulting agreement with the company Catapult Energy. “The opportunities for decarbonization and mitigation of the reduction of greenhouse gases in the mining industry processes will be evaluated. The work will start in the second half of this year” said Alexandre Mello.
The director of IBRAM also recalled that without mining it is not possible to evolve in the energy transition. “Brazil needs to walk and stand out in the production of strategic minerals for the supply of fundamental raw materials for this transition. Therefore, it is important to obtain a better geological knowledge of the Brazilian territory, since currently around 4% of our territory is mapped at an adequate scale”, he said.
