The CEO of the IBRAM, Raul Jungmann, participated in the 17th edition of the Brazil-Canada Conference at the annual convention of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada – PDAC 2023, which takes place in Toronto, Canada. He was one of the speakers on the panel “Geopolitics of minerals in the new economy: the sustainable value of your company”.
“Brazil has a high mineral vocation, with mineral provinces spread throughout the territory and, although the country has already stood out as a player for several commodities, its true mineral potential is still not fully known”, explained Jungmann.
According to the director-president of IBRAM, the trend towards decarbonization of the economy and the new global energy matrix points to new opportunities for the mineral sector, especially through the supply of new materials. “The scale and composition of demand for minerals and metals is already changing as a result of this trend. For Brazil to be compatible with its possibilities, it is fundamentally necessary to establish public and private capital partnerships for investments in mining, including involving the stock exchange”, he said.
Raul Jungmann also stressed the importance of a national policy aimed specifically at critical minerals: “This is a very important agenda and we are working towards it”.
For Jungamnn, mining needs more comprehensive actions, such as reducing the bureaucracy of licensing, tax compensation for risky investments in exploration and production, and incentives for entrepreneurship in the sector, among others.
He recalled that developed countries are aware of sustainable issues such as climate change and will necessarily need more minerals for this transition.
Also participating in the debate were Photinie Koutsavlis, Vice President of Economic Affairs and Climate Change at the Mining Association of Canada; Nancy Concepcion, Global Product Marketing Manager at Vale; Michael von Herff, co-founder and managing partner of PAA Advisory Councils; Natascha Cunha, Minerals Sector Specialist at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and Rafael Benke, CEO of Proactiva and Chairman of the BCCC ESG Committee.
Annually, the Brazil-Canada Conference takes place at the PDAC to promote an exchange between the two countries with the sharing of information and opportunities for future investments in Brazilian mining.
