The Brazilian Mining Institute (IBRAM) believes that Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago possesses the necessary qualities and competencies to preside over COP30, the UN climate change conference, which will be held in Belém (PA) in November. According to IBRAM’s Executive Director, Raul Jungmann, Corrêa do Lago will be able to rise to the challenge of “leading high-level discussions at what will be the most important COP in recent years, providing an opportunity for countries to resolve impasses that could help reverse the worsening climate emergency.”

Raul Jungmann highlights that the conference will provide a platform to assess the key role of industrial mining in global efforts to accelerate the energy transition. This is because minerals are essential for developing new technologies and equipment for clean energy. The crucial connection between minerals and climate is, in fact, recognized by the president of COP30.

In November, the ambassador, who oversees the Climate, Energy, and Environment Department at Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, visited IBRAM’s headquarters in Brasília to participate in an event reviewing IBRAM’s 2024 initiatives. On that occasion, Corrêa do Lago stated that COP30 “will be an extraordinary opportunity for Brazil” to showcase its strengths and prospects regarding climate issues, including its capacity to produce the critical and strategic minerals the world demands in large quantities. Brazil’s mining sector has the potential to rank “among the most sustainable in the world” in the discussions at COP30.

Raul Jungmann added that IBRAM and its technical resources are available to support the ambassador and his team in developing the conference’s climate agenda.
