Mineral sector professionals and specialists responsible for creating and standardizing technical standards in mining (ISO and ABNT) met this Thursday, 12/01, at the office of the Brazilian Institute of Mining (IBRAM), in Belo Horizonte (MG) , to celebrate 40 years of Brazilian mining in International Standardization.

The norms are extremely important for suppliers and consumers of ores, since they allow quantifying their quality characteristics, based on which billing, premiums and fines are calculated for each shipment at the commercial interface.

“Standardization is a fundamental factor for the competitiveness and productivity of the mineral sector. Without having the technical specifications, it is difficult to work in the market, defend yourself, buy, and so on. Standardization is a factor for the success of the sector We are here happy with the achievement of this initiative, reaching four decades of hard work and development”, said the CEO of IBRAM, Raul Jungmann.

Since 1994, 28 years ago, IBRAM has developed a broad support program for the participation of Brazilian companies producing iron ore, copper and nickel ores and concentrates, and primary nickel products in the development of technical standards ISO – International Organization for Standardization and ABNT – Brazilian Association of Technical Standards. This program is coordinated by IBRAM-CONIM, an acronym that refers to the Committee for International Standardization in Mining, headquartered at the Institute’s office in Belo Horizonte.

The director of Sustainability and Regulatory Affairs, Júlio Nery, reinforced the work carried out over the years in favor of standardization. “This year we placed technical standards for dams 13028 and 13029 within IBRAM-CONIM. IBRAM coordinated the first edition of the technical standards in 1996. The Brazilian Committee of Large Dams is making the first technical standard for earth dams in Brazil this year . If we analyze the projects of these norms, they contemplate very advanced safety conditions”, he evaluated.

For the coordinator of IBRAM-CONIM, Rejane Carvalho, the future of the program is promising. “These 40 years have been marked by the hard work of professionals who have tirelessly dedicated themselves to standardization in Brazil and the results are extremely positive. However, we will continue in this search for improvements and standardization of technical standards”, he highlighted.
