11th edition of CBMINA, held by IBRAM, started last Tuesday, in Belo Horizonte (MG)

The evolution and challenges of the mining industry were addressed at the opening ceremony of the 11th edition of the Brazilian Congress of Open Air and Underground Mines (CBMINA), this Tuesday (12/9), in Belo Horizonte (MG). The Congress is held by the Brazilian Mining Institute (IBRAM), in partnership with the Department of Mining Engineering at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG).

“IBRAM is concerned with bringing everyone together here at CBMINA, around the commitments that the sector has made with sustainability and responsibility for everything and everyone around it”, highlighted the vice-president of IBRAM, Fernando Azevedo e Silva. He represented the CEO, Raul Jungmann. The event promotes an exchange between students, teachers, researchers, authorities, executives and professionals linked to the mineral sector to present new propositions and approaches for the constant evolution of mining activities.

The vice-rector of UFMG, Professor Alessandro Fernandes, highlighted the University’s concern with ESG and its relationship with the mineral sector. “We know the importance of mining for our country, (the importance) of the University to add value to the sector, which is what we seek with this event, but, above all, it is essential to promote all this learning, this social, economic and environmental advancement of Brazil responsibly”, he analyzed.

Also present at the opening ceremony were the vice-rector of the UFMG School of Engineering, Henrique Resende Martins; the head of the Mining Engineering Department at UFMG, Andréia Bicalho Henriques; the commander of the Environmental Emergency and Disaster Response Battalion (BEMAD) of the Fire Department, Lieutenant Colonel, Welter Alves das Chagas; the deputy coordinator of the Civil Defense of Minas Gerais, Lieutenant Colonel Carlos Eduardo Lopes; the Regional Superintendent of the Geological Survey of Brazil, Marlon Marques Coutinho; the Deputy Secretary of Environment and Sustainable Development of Minas Gerais, Leonardo Rodrigues; the chief of staff of the Minas Gerais State Research Support Foundation (FAPEMIG), Daniel Ferreira; the DENIM professor at UFMG, Cláudio Lúcio Lopes Pinto; and the director of Sustainability and Regulatory Affairs at IBRAM, Julio Nery.

CBMINA: debates and presentations of technical works

CBMINA began in the morning with a broad debate between mining experts from all over Brazil. The main themes presented were: evolution of operational conditions in underground mines and their influence on labor relations; declarations of resources and reserves and the mining title as financing guarantee; and professional training and careers in the mineral sector. The afternoon was reserved for the presentation of technical works submitted to the Congress.
