IBRAM and partner countries discuss best practices in sustainability in mining as part of the parallel program of PDAC 2026.

The global sustainability agenda in the mining sector was highlighted at a meeting promoted by Brazilian Mining Institute (IBRAM) with representatives from countries that have adopted the program Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM)This initiative, led by the Mining Association of Canada (MAC), aimed to strengthen international cooperation and promote the exchange of experiences focused on improving sustainability practices in mining.

During lunch with the participating countries of the TSM and MAC, the current stage of the unified global standard and the TSM's transition process to this standard were discussed. Each association had the opportunity to present the development of the methodology in its country, highlighting advances, challenges, and lessons learned.

The interim CEO and Director of Institutional Relations of IBRAM, Pablo Cesário, detailed the work plans for the adoption of these self-regulation standards and shared Brazil's experience throughout 2025. The meeting also included the participation of the Director of Mining Affairs, Julio Nery, the Research and Development Manager, Cinthia Rodrigues, and the independent consultant Rafael Benke. Also present were the CEO of the Mining Association of Canada, Pierre Gratton, and the Vice President of Sustainability, Ben Chalmers, as well as representatives from Colombia, Mexico, Argentina, Guatemala, Ecuador, the Philippines, Finland, and Brazil.

TSM is a program developed by MAC to guide and support companies in managing environmental and social risks. In Brazil, the methodology is being adapted with the active participation of IBRAM and its associates, reinforcing the Brazilian mining sector's commitment to international standards of governance, transparency, and continuous improvement.
