Brazil gets new version of the Geological Map
25/07/25
The Geological Survey of Brazil (SGB) launched the new version of the Geological Map of Brazil at a 1:5,000,000 scale last Thursday (24). The publication presents updated data, new interpretations, and scientific advancements, contributing to a broader understanding of Brazil’s geological formation.
“The update of the Geological Map, after 21 years, is a milestone for the country’s geoscientific knowledge. With decades of research and new technologies, we have built an integrated view of our geology. This foundation supports decision-making in mining, environmental management, infrastructure, and science. More than just a technical resource, it is a strategic tool for Brazil’s development,” emphasized Valdir Silveira, Director of Geology and Mineral Resources at SGB.
The map highlights the stratigraphic units of the national territory and includes a technical insert featuring the main geological provinces of the country. Additionally, the map classifies regions according to the geological period and era in which they were formed, offering a comprehensive view of Brazil’s geological evolution over billions of years.
Geosciences researcher Vladimir Medeiros, who contributed to the development of the map, reinforces that the work aligns with SGB’s mission: “To generate and disseminate geoscientific knowledge with excellence, contributing to improving quality of life and the sustainable development of Brazil.”
The map is available in different scales and formats — including 1:2,500,000 (SHP format) and 1:5,000,000 (PDF and JPEG) — structured in a Geographic Information System (GIS), along with an explanatory text in PDF format. The release is part of the Geology for Mining and Sustainable Development initiative under the Safe and Sustainable Mining Program.
