The Brazilian Mining Institute (IBRAM) is hosting the seminar “Brazil Mining ESG Towards COP30” this Thursday and Friday, August 21–22, in Nova Lima (MG), in partnership with the Dom Cabral Foundation (FDC). The event brings together professionals from the mining sector and representatives from the 12 Working Groups of Brazil’s Mining ESG Agenda. They have been invited to discuss the sector’s concrete progress in sustainability, safety, and accountability, as well as to propose goals and commitments to be presented at the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30).

IBRAM’s CEO, Raul Jungmann, participating virtually, emphasized the strategic role of mining in the transition to a low-carbon economy, highlighting the sector’s commitment to sustainability and socio-environmental responsibility.
“The points discussed at this seminar will be submitted to IBRAM’s Board of Directors for approval. The targets to be presented at the Climate Conference in November will reflect the mineral sector’s engagement, responsibility, and commitment to Brazil and humanity,” he stated.

IBRAM’s Vice President, Fernando Azevedo, highlighted the importance of the discussions for including mining’s contributions in COP30’s official agenda.
“We are assessing progress on key ESG topics such as process safety, climate change, energy, use of natural resources, community relations, diversity, inclusion, governance, compliance, and land management,” he said.

The sector’s commitment to a deep transformation began with the launch of IBRAM’s Commitment Letter to Society in 2019, which reinforced the industry’s dedication to continuous improvement in processes, technologies, and relationships with people and nature.

Marina Spínola, Director of Institutional Relations and Sustainability at the Dom Cabral Foundation, emphasized academia’s role in the process:
“FDC’s mission is to develop leaders capable of balancing economic performance with social progress. This seminar is an opportunity to shape the global climate agenda for mining, showing that academia and the sector walk together—and that mining can and must be part of the solution to climate challenges,” she said.

Carlos Mello, CEO of CSN Mineração, stated that the event marks a decisive moment:
“We are living through critical years for both the industry and the planet. Now is the time to be bold and propose real change. We must position ourselves as an industry that enables a better, fairer, and more sustainable future.”

Marina Magalhães, Director of Sustainability, Community and Institutional Relations at Mineração Usiminas, reinforced the importance of the initiative:
“This seminar expands an essential debate for the mining sector. We reaffirm our commitment to Brazil’s Mining ESG Agenda and to strategic topics such as climate change, community relations, water management, and the responsible use of natural resources.”

The first day of the seminar also featured participation from former Minister of the Environment Izabella Teixeira and FDC professor Maria Flávia Bastos.
